Crystal Care : How to Cleanse & Charge Your Crystals

You've brought home a beautiful crystal. You've set your intention, placed it on your desk, maybe worn it for a few days. And then someone asks: "Have you cleansed it yet?"

If you're new to crystals, this question can feel a little mystifying. Cleanse it? From what? It's a rock. What does that even mean?

Here's the simple version: crystals absorb and hold energy — from the environments they pass through, the people who handle them, and the emotions and intentions they're exposed to. Over time, that accumulated energy can dull their effectiveness. Cleansing clears that slate. Charging restores their natural vitality. Together, these two practices keep your crystals working at their best.

Let's walk through everything you need to know — simply and practically.

Do All Crystals Need Cleansing?

Almost all crystals benefit from regular cleansing — but there are two notable exceptions worth knowing about:

  • Selenite — self-cleansing and never needs to be cleared. In fact, it cleanses other crystals placed near or on it.
  • Citrine — one of the very few crystals that doesn't hold negative energy. It still benefits from occasional refreshing, but it doesn't accumulate what it doesn't need.

For all other crystals, regular cleansing is a good habit — especially for stones you use frequently, wear daily or work with during emotionally intense periods.

How Often Should You Cleanse Your Crystals?

There's no strict rule, but here are some useful guidelines:

  • When you first bring a crystal home — always. You don't know how many hands it's passed through or what energy it's carrying.
  • After intense use — if you've been working with a crystal during a difficult period, a healing session, or an emotionally charged time, cleanse it afterward.
  • Monthly at minimum — a full moon cleanse once a month is a beautiful, easy rhythm to establish.
  • When something feels off — if a crystal feels heavy, dull, or just not quite right, trust that instinct and cleanse it.

Methods for Cleansing Your Crystals

1. Moonlight — The Universal Method

Leaving your crystals out under the full moon overnight is one of the most beloved and effective cleansing methods — and it works for virtually every crystal without exception. Place them on a windowsill, a balcony, or directly on the earth under the open sky. The moon's energy clears and recharges simultaneously.

You don't need a full moon for this to work — any moonlight will cleanse — but the full moon is the most potent. Many crystal practitioners make a monthly ritual of it, setting out their entire collection on the night of the full moon.

Safe for: All crystals.

2. Smoke Cleansing — Sage, Palo Santo & Incense

Passing your crystal through the smoke of sage, palo santo, or incense is a quick, effective cleansing method that works beautifully for all crystals. Hold the crystal in the smoke for 30-60 seconds while setting the intention to clear any stagnant or unwanted energy.

This is particularly useful for a quick reset between uses, or when you don't want to wait for the next full moon.

Safe for: All crystals.

3. Sound — Singing Bowls, Bells & Tuning Forks

Sound cleansing works by using vibration to break up and clear stagnant energy. Place your crystals near a singing bowl and strike it, letting the sound waves wash over the stones. Alternatively, use a bell, a tuning fork, or even play high-frequency music near your collection.

This is one of the most efficient methods for cleansing multiple crystals at once — and it's deeply satisfying to do.

Safe for: All crystals.

4. Running Water — For Water-Safe Crystals Only

Holding a crystal under cool running water for a minute or two — while setting the intention to clear its energy — is a simple and effective cleansing method. Natural running water (a stream or river) is ideal, but tap water works perfectly well.

Important: Not all crystals are water-safe. Some dissolve, rust, or become damaged with water exposure. Always check before using this method.

Water-safe crystals include: Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Green Aventurine, Black Tourmaline.

NOT water-safe: Selenite (dissolves), Pyrite (rusts), Lapis Lazuli (prolonged exposure damages surface).

5. Selenite — The Effortless Option

Place your crystals on a Selenite charging plate or beside a Selenite wand overnight. Selenite continuously emits a high-vibrational, cleansing energy that clears and recharges whatever is placed near it. No effort required — just leave them there and let Selenite do its work.

This is the method I recommend most for beginners because it's completely passive, works for all crystals and requires no timing or preparation.

Safe for: All crystals.

6. Earth — For a Deep Reset

Burying a crystal in the earth for 24-48 hours gives it one of the deepest, most thorough cleanses available. The earth absorbs and neutralises stagnant energy and returns the crystal to its natural state. This is particularly powerful for crystals that have been through a lot — or ones you've just acquired and want to fully reset.

Just remember where you buried it.

Safe for: Most crystals. Avoid for very soft or porous stones.

How to Charge Your Crystals

Cleansing clears a crystal's energy. Charging restores and amplifies it. Many cleansing methods — moonlight, Selenite, earth — both cleanse and charge simultaneously. But here are some additional charging methods worth knowing:

  • Sunlight — a short period in morning sunlight charges many crystals beautifully. However, prolonged sun exposure can fade colour in stones like Amethyst, Rose Quartz, and Moonstone. Keep sun charging to 1-2 hours maximum.
  • Intention — holding a crystal in both hands, breathing slowly, and consciously directing your intention into it is a powerful form of charging. You're essentially programming it with a specific purpose.
  • Crystal clusters — placing smaller crystals on or near a large Clear Quartz or Amethyst cluster charges them with amplified energy.
  • Nature — leaving crystals outside in the rain (water-safe ones only), on the grass, or near plants connects them back to natural earth energy.

A Quick Reference Guide

  • Moonlight — safe for all crystals ✓
  • Smoke — safe for all crystals ✓
  • Sound — safe for all crystals ✓
  • Selenite plate — safe for all crystals ✓
  • Running water — check first (avoid Selenite, Pyrite, Lapis Lazuli) ⚠️
  • Sunlight — brief only (avoid for colour-sensitive stones) ⚠️
  • Earth burial — safe for most, avoid very soft stones ⚠️

A Final Word

Crystal care doesn't need to be complicated. A monthly moonlight cleanse, a Selenite plate on your shelf, and a stick of palo santo for quick resets — that's genuinely all you need to keep your crystals working beautifully.

The most important thing is consistency. Crystals that are regularly cleansed and charged feel different — lighter, clearer, more alive. And when your crystals feel good, the energy they bring to your space and your practice reflects that.

At Ek Tattva, we carry Selenite plates, wands, and bowls that make crystal care effortless — as well as the full range of crystals mentioned in this guide. Take care of your crystals, and they'll take care of you.
